It did not translate from paper to fabric. So I thought, just finish it.

Well I put it away and forgot about it for a couple of years until I was cleaning out and there it was-the quilt that did not work out. It just needed borders, quilting and binding, then this sad little tale would end. Today I added boarders, hopefully soon I will quilt and bind it, then it will be time to move on.
Goodbye little Not So Woven Ribbon-Woven Ribbon Quilt.

On to other adventures!

Where does time go!

O.K. I am again sewing and quilting etc. There are pictures, there are stories, there will be tutorials! So to start here are a couple of pictures from the "Lab". They are simple blankets, easy to make and no quilting required. I am finishing up the instructions so hopefully you will see how they are made soon.
Better get back at it. If any of you do the Etsy thing, or something similar you might also want to check out Art Fire. They have 2 levels, the first level has no fees, that's right none, zero, zip, big 0. If you want you can do the pro level and it is just $9.95 per month. Flat fee, no listing fees etc.

This is the link to my blog on Art Fire. http://www.artfire.com/users/jannys/blog . I know there is still a lot of personal ground to cover, places like Etsy and Art Fire are not instant selling machines, but it is a place to list without setting up a complete web site-ecommerce thingy.
Well I am off to work on the never completed string thingy (Getting really tired of it) and on a log cabin quilt. I will have pictures tomorrow because I need to get done and move on to pillows.

Before I say happy stitching to you, I wanted to tell you about a fun project I found on Moda Bake Shop. It is dish towels with a bit of fabric and rick rack. That is it! The instructions do not tell you but they use a Jelly Roll strip, that is just a strip that is 2 1/2" by the width of the fabric.

Here is what it looks like and I will list a link for the instructions. http://www.modabakeshop.com/2009/08/jelly-towels.html

Happy Stitching to you, until we meet again.
Jan

New Things are Happening

There are new things happening around here. I know we all have busy lives, but sometimes life seems to pull us out of whack a bit. That is where I am now. A bit out of whack, yet all is well.
We have been busy with our little super hero-1 year old grandson-and his new baby brothers. Our son and daughter in law's babies were born November 3rd and at that time were very premature, so here we go into the world of the NICU and premature babies. Now they are going great. They are still being cared for in the hospital but will head home soon and they are truly little miracles!
So now I must say it is time for a new year and I am really ready. My New Years resolutions are simple. (Background? I usually don't make New Years resolutions or eat black eyed peas, but this year I thought I would go for the resolutions, can't do black eyed peas.) There are 3 resolutions:
#3. Make bread (the baked kind)
#2 Become proficient in machine embroidery
#1 Play as hard as humanly possible.
That's it! I will keep you posted.

On to other stitchingly things.
There is a new contest:
It is called the "Jelly Roll 'Dream' Challenge", please note I am not in anyway pushing or even suggesting that anyone do this competition. I am thinking maybe Thready should start a Precut challenge, but there would not be an entry fee! If you decide to do the challenge please read the "Terms and Conditions" they are very-well enlightening. You can see them here: http://www.jellyrollquilters.com/page/6312875:Page:85 So I guess I am "just saying" it is out there if you are interested.

There is also a designer sharing thing called "Block-a-Palooza", lots of designers, good ideas (and no entry fee-o.k. that kind of bothered me a bit) I will post more about the palooza by the weekend.
The bloggers are:
Amanda Sasikirana - http://amandasasikirana.wordpress.com/
Amy Ellis - http://amyscreativeside.com/
Angela Yosten - http://blog.angelayosten.com/
Cherri House - http://lizzyhouse.typepad.com/cherry_house_quilts/
Elizabeth Hartman - http://www.ohfransson.com/
Fat Quarterly team - http://blog.fatquarterly.com/
Heather Bostic - http://alamodefabric.blogspot.com/
Jennifer Davis - http://sugarstitches.com/blog/
John Adams - http://www.quiltdad.com/
Julie Herman - http://www.jaybirdquilts.com/
Kaye Prince - http://miss-print.blogspot.com/
Kerri Horsley - http://lovelylittlehandmades.blogspot.com/
Monica Solorio-Snow - http://www.thehappyzombie.com/blog/
Natalia Bonner - http://www.piecenquilt.blogspot.com/
Ryan Walsh - http://www.ryanwalshquilts.com/
Scott Hansen - http://bluenickelstudios.com/
Vanessa Christenson - http://www.vanessachristenson.com/

One more thing. I am doing a BOM through the local quilt store from the "Rose of Sharon" book by Sharon Pederson. It will be fun and I will post (I promise) my progress.

It looks hard, but it is one of those step by step things!

Well I am off to work on one of my resolutions. Do you remember the string quilt? Well I will get back to it today or tomorrow. All is well now, but we have had some adventures. My daughter-in-law and son are expecting twin boys and the first week of October things got a bit bumpy. She was sent to Houston TX for an emergency procedure and is currently taking it very easy. As of Monday all is well.
The good news, I have had the opportunity to spend some very special time with my grandson, their 1 year old, Gavin, (Mr Gav as his G-pa and I call him). He is a wonderful, inquisitive 1 year old. I believe grand kids keep us young because they keep us busy!
Then there was a trip to the Georgia coast for Wedding, St Simon Island to be exact. Awesome! So here is how it works-Gudrun has lined up these 10 incredible designers and each will post a project (based on a theme) then you leave a comment and have the opportunity to make the project. If you leave a comment for each designer on their "day" then there is a chance that you could win a prize. Now it would be so awesome if someone I know would win!! If you are using 2" strips make the strips at least 33" but you can increase the length of the strips to 41" if you would prefer. These lengths allow for a bit of trimming. The example of the pieces sewn into strips is below.

If you have strips cut from the full width of the fabric skip the step above and go right to sewing the strip sets together-see next paragraph. If you want to put lace or trims in the quilt you can add them to the strips before they are sewn into the strip sets.

Sew the strips into strip sets. If using 1 1/2" strips sew 6 strips together to make a strip set, (see picture below). If using 2" strips to make the strip set follow the example below but use 5 strips instead of 6 strips.
(If needed click on the image to get a better view)

Hopfully soon there will be "real" pictures, but until then, it is time to have fun and sew some strips!

Before we begin, I must tell you a sad but true story. As I began working on this project I had hoped to take pictures, add humor, make this soooo fun, well as Murphy would have it the Camera shot it's last. So for now I must rely on my scanner and I could not put Hershey Kisses or a dump truck on the scanner. There is a bit of hope though, Mr Handsome is on the case. If the camera can be fixed he can do it. If not-well does anyone have advice on what kind of camera to get?

Supplies for “Thready Quilt Along

Deciding which fabrics to use can be a bit daunting for a quilt like this, but using several fabrics only adds to the charm of this quilt. Trims, selvages, the good parts of warn clothing or other than quilting cottons can also be incorporated so feel free to mix it up a bit. It is helpful if the fabrics are all of similar weight and cleaning methods, if you want to use a special fabric that is light weight or stretchy think about fusing interfacing to the back of the fabric before cutting. I would not use a fabric that is extra heavy-save those for other projects.

Perspective Improvers: (referred to as PI within the directions)

What are PI’s? Anything that helps you get through the tough times and they also help qualify what might be difficult. (Chocolate Kisses and Hugs or Animal Crackers are great PI’s.) PI's are rated from 1-easy-no stress to 4-yikes could be tough So start now with a PI of 1 just to get the hang of it.

Block fabric: Got fabric you don't like, that is beyond its youth, ugly? Now is the time to use it!

Fabric amounts for the blocks are only estimates, there are many variables that can affect the amount of fabric needed, but additional fabric can be added as the strip sets are made.

5 to 5 ½ yards should be enough. This is about 2 grocery sacks full of cut strips (not packed down) the amount needed depends on the scraps and the width of the strips cut for the blocks.

Sashing strips and borders:
4 yards.
A note about sashing and borders for this project; Normally I collect all the fabric I need for each project but for this one I would wait to see what the blocks look like then pick out my sashing and boarders

Other supplies:
Cozy Quilt Strip tube ruler or other ruler to cut triangles. You won’t need this for a couple more weeks.
Normal rotary cutting and sewing supplies

Helpful supplies:
Spray starch
June Taylor Shape cut-this is helpful if you are cutting larger pieces of fabric such as ¼ yards or fat quarters but it is not a necessity. This cutting tool lets you cut fabric strips quickly, but a regular ruler also works just fine.

Cutting Instructions for “Thready Quilt Along”
Cutting Decisions (2 PI):

Instructions for this quilt will be primarily based on 1 ½” by the width of the fabric strips, this will ultimately make a 12” finished square, but you don’t have to cut them 1 ½”, if you want to sew fewer strips and make larger blocks cut the strips 2”, you will end up with a block that is 15” finished square. ****Note the Cozy Quilt Strip tube ruler will work only for cutting pieces up to 13 1/2” length so we will have to explore other rulers for bigger blocks.

You can also have a “string” quilt and sew strip sets with strips that are of varying widths. The block can be any size you would like, but much more than 15” and it looks chunky, my favorite size for a string block is somewhere between 9” to 12” finished.

Cutting Strips: (1PI):
O.K. hopefully you have made the decision about what size you want to cut your strips. So start cutting and use up all those fabrics pieces that are just too good to throw away and those wonderful cotton shirts with spaghetti stains!

Cut your fabric strips the desired size by the width of your fabric and place them in a grocery bag. Don't cut them the size of your blocks we will do that later. If your strips are shorter than the desired block, two pieces can be sewn together to make a longer strip (We will explore this in the next set of instructions.)

When done cutting have 1PI and rest up for next week because the strips are going to fly!

Talk to you soon,
Thready

"Thready Quilt Along"

Sometimes I need a bit of a push to get going with the next project. We will be making a stringy type quilt with alternate block settings etc. I will post the supply list by Monday 8/9/10, so gather up those bits and pieces, and don't forget to get a bag of your favorite chocolates. Now comes the hard part, turning on the machine! It seemed the software did not want to talk to the machine so the machine would not turn on (actually the machine itself turned on but the brains did not). I tired and tried last night to get something to work. The DH was in the middle of OOGN and he even stopped for a while to try to get it to work, this morning before going to work DH tried again. Then the decision was made I needed to call tech support. Well after reading to Mr tech guy all about my computer, telling him how everything was plugged in and going over what we had done Mr tech guy suggested we start from the top. Then Mr tech guy suggested I make sure the big red button was not pressed down. It was so I turned the big red button, TADA the machine's brains are now on.

Mr Tech Guy just had to point out that the machine had a red sign hanging on the big red button. I must say nowhere in the instructions, help menu or trouble shooting guide does it tell you about the big red button. I told him he had to love newbies!
Lesson learned? Sometimes the answer is right in front of you.
Now I am on to new adventures.
Have a great day!
Jan

Blogging

Well I did my first every guest blog. O.K. what book is Thready all excited about, it is Country Comforts by Cheryl Wall for That Patchwork Place.

About the Book:

Warm and welcoming, each quilt in this book invites quilters to let go of the “rules” and find joy in the journey. The 12 projects feature traditional blocks such as Log Cabin, Bear’s Paw, and Churn Dash, with a twist that makes them fresh and new. Choose from quilts and wall hangings, many featuring folksy appliqué for added flair. Quilters of all levels will enjoy the relaxed nature of these scrappy projects—imperfections only add to their personality and charm!

The give away will happen 5/31/10.
